| Our need for a new pharmacy is way overdue. The current facility, a large prefabricated
room was built over 10 years ago as a ‘temporary’ measure. At the present moment, medication is dispensed form
this facility to thousands of patients every month, and the impact of HIV/AIDs is resulting in an ever-increasing
number of people becoming ill, which highlights the need to address the pharmacy requirements… |

|
| The good news is that we in the process of having plans drawn up for the pharmacy building
which will accommodate St Mary’s needs now – and allow for growth in the future. At a cost of around R 4 million,
the new facility will extend into the current car park area and will streamline dispensary services for the
hospital’s patients. |

| The need for Financial Assistance |
The legacies of poverty, malnutrition, disease and violence still
predominate and the unemployment rate is high. Approximately 75-80% of the population are either looking for
work or are not economically active. The onslaught of HIV/AIDS will sustain this rate. Since its inception,
the Hospital has catered primarily to the healthcare needs of the “poorest of the poor”, living in rural
and peri-urban areas. Most of our patients are not on medical aid and are financially unable to make more
than a token payment, if anything at all. The consequence of which, many are unable to afford quality health
care!
St Mary’s receives a government grant; however this only covers 80% of the entire hospital
operational costs. The shortfall is fundraised; and it the generosity of our partners that provides
St Mary’s with the opportunity to provide holistic and quality health care to our patients, and educate
the next generation of dedicated nurses.
Every contribution counts, every contribution is a cherished! |
